Make Your Rental Feel Like Home

Rental Home, Front Door

Let’s skip the debate on whether renting or buying is best. It’s up to the client to decide for themselves. Instead, let’s explore ways agents can suggest rental customizations – without breaking the rules or sacrificing security deposits.  Most rentals have white walls and fixtures that are as generic as possible to appeal to the masses, but the restrictions of a lease can be honored while expressing personal style. Ask the landlord’s permission for the following style options.

Paint The Front Door

Painting all the white walls of a rental may not be the best idea. However, splashing color on the front door is the easiest way to communicate personality. If the front door is already painted, it will be easier to be granted permission for a makeover. It takes about an hour to paint and another hour to revert once the lease is up. Be bold with lime or turquoise. Get peppy with teal or make a statement with a red door. Enhance a brick exterior with a white door or a white exterior with a brown door. Get noticed with unexpected pairings. Think sunny yellow and sage trim or a red door with pink trim. Clashing hues such as yellow and purple might work for some clients, but try to discourage anything that may draw negative attention.

Switch The Showerhead

Upgrade a bathroom with a new showerhead. Make sure to keep the original showerhead to re-mount before vacating. Most showerheads will attach to the shower arm, so don’t worry about fit. Do some research to see which style and finish suit the aesthetic. Rain showerheads can make every day feel like a vacation, but they can also deliver less water pressure. A new trend is a handheld showerhead that emits microdroplets that melt into the skin rather than drench it.

Create A Gallery Wall

A gallery wall breaks up the monotony of white surroundings. It showcases passions, memories and inspirations. Many make the mistake of rushing through the process of deciding what to hang. Practice patience. Choose your most beloved pieces and put the rest away. Decide on six, nine or more frames. Plan out a grid by tracing the frames onto craft paper and cutting them out. Tape these templates to the walls and arrange as desired before hanging your art. Command hooks rather than nails might be best for leased properties.
